Kauai’s dramatic North Shore with heavenly beaches and spectacular sea cliffs was my Christmas gift from Mother Nature

CHRISTMAS IN KAUAI

walking on the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapiai Beach
in the rain to reach the Na Pali coast,
to witness the majestic emerald green pinnacles
towering along the shoreline

admiring the wild orchids with their delicate purplish flowers
before reaching the raging river and deciding not to cross,
discovering at the trail entrance when I returned
a sign saying”Closed Due to Severe Weather”

stopping in at the Tikki Ni Bar
to reward myself with a Mai Tai drink
and a delicious BBQ pork sandwich

the next morning driving to Waimea Canyon State Park
to see the spectacular”Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and
walking the Lilau Trail full of hala indigenous trees

in the afternoon visiting the Kauai Coffee Plantation
and buying coffee for all my friends
to get our Hawaiian caffeine fix

then stopping at the famous Al Pastor’s fish taco truck,
tasting fresh ahi fish tacos with rice and beans
while sitting in my car to stay dry in the passing storm

hiking the next day into Lumahai Beach
and walking the two miles around the crescent white beach,
where Mitzi Gaynor sang in”South Pacific”

then onto Hanalei Bay to enjoy walking
with my feet sinking into the white sands,
watching young boys surf with visions of riding the waves of the North Shore

finding the secluded and hidden Sea Lodge Beach,
going for a swim and skinny dipping when I was alone,
feeling free like a little boy walking naked along the beach
